Caught Up – Getting Out of the Common Trap

Life with kids is messy, but it's also beautiful! Learn how to cultivate gratitude, establish routines, and declutter your space for a more peaceful home. Even the best home cleaning calendar will not do if you do not have these 4 things in place.

“Caught up!” a phrase often used by busy moms as they attempt to explain why life just feels so chaotic. How many times have you expressed to a friend or your husband, “I feel like I am never caught up!”. What if “caught up” was a myth that we are drowning in?

Let’s get real about something that’s been on my heart lately – the myth of being “caught up.” We all know it’s impossible, yet the pressure to keep everything in perfect order can feel overwhelming, especially with young ones running around. I am here to tell you, even with all the systems I rave about, I don’t believe we can be caught up. So, let’s ditch this idea together and find a more joyful way to navigate modern homemaking.

Breaking Free from the Illusion:

The pursuit of being perpetually caught up is like chasing a rainbow; it’s elusive and sets us up for frustration. The reality is, there will always be dishes, toys to pick up, messes to clean, and laundry to do (unless you are nudists). So instead of trying to chase “caught up”, what if we instead focused on practical systems that create a rhythm in our home? We will need to learn to embrace the fact that there’ll always be something undone, and that’s perfectly fine. Let’s set achievable goals and build routines that make life a bit more manageable.

Scripture Reference: Philippians 4:13 – “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”

These 4 tangible tips will help Christian moms embrace grace, establish routines, and create a clutter-free space for a more joyful life. These are the best tips for Christian Stay at Home moms that are looking to create a cleaning routine.

The Steps to Change Our Homemaking Mindset

Cultivating a Grateful Heart

In the busy life we have as moms, let’s activate the parts of our minds that appreciate what we’ve accomplished. Rather than fixating on what’s left undone, celebrate the small victories. Find joy in the messy moments of connection with your kids. Gratitude transforms our outlook, helping us see the beauty in the midst of our busy lives.

Scripture Encouragement: Colossians 3:15 – “And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.”

Establish a System and Rhythm

Instead of chasing the illusion of being perpetually caught up, focus on creating practical systems that bring rhythm to your days. Break down tasks into manageable steps and establish routines that suit your family’s lifestyle. Consider using a zone cleaning schedule, meal planning, or organizing daily activities, having a system in place helps reduce overwhelm and creates a sense of order.

Be Better Stewards of Your Time

Time is a precious gift, and being intentional about how you spend it is key. Identify time-wasters and distractions, and strive to minimize them. Set boundaries on social media (do not open your social media first thing in the morning), delegate tasks when possible, and prioritize activities that align with your values and goals. Consider implementing a Time Blocking Habit and routine. By becoming better stewards of your time, you create space for what truly matters.

Also, I think it is important to reference that we need to be better about saying “no”. I saw it referenced recently as vitamin N. Busy schedules can keep us out of focus on our home and when we fill our plates with too many commitments, it can often create bitterness in us. Schedule your time wisely in AND out of your home.

Scripture Encouragement: Ephesians 5:15-16 – “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.”

Declutter Your Home

Every item in your home needs to be “managed”. That means it needs a home, it needs to be picked up and put away, or moved to clean. Clutter can weigh us down physically and mentally, making it harder to find peace and focus. You may feel “never caught up” because you are tackling the same pile of “unnecessary things” day in and out. Start to observe your children’s play habits. Are they just dumping everything out or are they actually using it? Do they have a favorite set of toys? Keep the things that only serve your family.

Take time to declutter your living space, clearing out items that no longer serve you or bring you joy. Start small, tackling one area at a time, and donate or discard items that you no longer need. Creating a clutter-free environment allows for better organization and a clearer mind to focus on what truly matters. While decluttering, we should also be establishing boundaries about what we bring in to our home, also.

Scripture Encouragement: Matthew 6:19-21 – “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

It's time to let go of the pressure to be 'caught up' and embrace grace instead. These 4 tangible tips will help you live authentically and joyfully as a Christian mom. Do not create a home cleaning schedule until you try this!
