If we are talking about pumpkin spice, I am your girl. Even though it is still in the 80s here in California, I love fall because it kicks off the season of holiday joy. A pumpkin spice latte is just a fall tradition. I used to make several Starbucks drive-thru runs to get a venti Pumpkin Spice Latte. I haven’t had a “true” PSL from Starbucks in a few years. WHAT?!?!
Can we talk?! Girlfriend to girlfriend?!? Girlfriend, a grande Starbucks PSL, with non-fat milk has 49g of sugar. That’s like 4 and a half tablespoons of Pillsbury vanilla frosting. A dang cupcake has less sugar than a tall, just a small Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte which has 38g. A PSL is made of milk, espresso, and a pumpkin spice syrup, which is really just sugar, skim milk, pumpkin, and salt. So even if you get a coconut milk PSL, it isn’t dairy-free. You know I love you, right? Don’t be mad at me.
Okay, now that I have become a total downer. I have a solution. A dairy-free pumpkin spice latte sweetened with maple syrup. It is simple to make at home. Not only will it save you a TON of unwanted sugar calories, it healthier for your wallet too.
One final thought. If a Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks truly is your treat, your indulgence, your “I cannot live without having one PSL this year, Anna!!” Then go for it. We talked earlier this week about choices. If you LOVE Pumpkin Spice Lattes have one, but choose it as a treat. Personally, pumpkin cupcakes or pumpkin loaf sounds like WAY MORE of a treat to me. But hey, some of us like to DRINK our treats, right?! #wine #PSL If drinking your treats is not your thing, you’ll love this recipe!
