Are you wondering if it is possible to take a rest day as a busy mom? As moms, we often find ourselves juggling numerous responsibilities, from managing the household to caring for our families and everything in between. While taking care of all of the things in our home and life, it’s easy to neglect our own well-being. Our culture often markets this as “self-care” and it is necessary to take a moment of rest. Self-care is not selfish, but it is necessary for our physical, mental, and emotional health.

Just to take a sabbath day as a mom, in our current culture, can seem so far out of reach.

Can I Take a Day Off as a Mom?

While there are seasons of motherhood where little people need us more, I believe it is possible to arrive at a place where “taking a day off” is something you can do. In this blog post, we’ll explore together the importance of rest for moms and provide practical tips for making the most of your well-deserved day off.

Recognizing the Importance of Rest

Before delving into tips for taking a day off, it’s essential to acknowledge the significance of rest for moms. Constantly being on the go can lead to burnout and exhaustion, affecting our ability to care for ourselves and our families effectively. We can find ourselves grumbling through tasks if we haven’t taken the necessary steps to rest and clear our schedule. Taking a day off allows us to recharge our batteries, replenish our energy reserves, and approach our daily responsibilities with renewed vigor and enthusiasm. It is what we all want, to arrive at a place of being a joyful mama, rather than a mama just treading water.

The Steps to Taking a Rest Day as a Mom

Planning Ahead as a Busy Mom

One of the key strategies for successfully taking a day off as a mom is planning ahead. You should be using a planner or planner page to make this happen. (This is the planner I use and Love) Schedule your day off in advance, ensuring that you can delegate tasks and get your home in to a place of rhythm. Most often it is the household chores that seem to tug at us. While I don’t believe you will ever be “caught up”, having a system and plan is critical for being able to take a day of rest. By planning ahead, you can minimize disruptions and ensure that you feel in a acceptable place with your duties.

Creating a Home Management System to Take a Rest Day

Another important part of being able to take a day off as a mom is having a reliable home management system in place. It is hard to take a day off when the laundry mountain is piled high, there’s messes everywhere, and you feel weighted down by your home. Again, I don’t believe there is such thing as being “perfectly caught up”, but there are times when we feel our home is in sync with taking a rest day.

Establishing routines and systems for household chores like laundry and dishes, meal planning, and organization can help streamline your day-to-day responsibilities, making it easier to take a break when needed. If you are managing your home in to a place of rhythm, having systems will allow you to prioritize that day of rest. Invest time in creating a home management system that works for you, allowing you to feel in rhythm and freeing up time for relaxation on your designated day off. Setting Boundaries as Busy Mom

As moms, we often feel the pressure to do it all and be everything to everyone. However, it’s essential to set boundaries and prioritize our own well-being. Communicate with your family members about your need for a day off and set clear boundaries regarding your availability and responsibilities during that time. Saying “no” to over-scheduling is important. It is okay to not be at every birthday party, group dinner, or free event. Setting boundaries empowers you to prioritize rest without feeling guilty or overwhelmed by external demands. I also think it is important for our children to see us scheduling a time to rest or simply be present in the flow of our day.

How to Take a Rest Day for Busy Moms

To recap, it is important to schedule a day of rest whenever possible. Using a planner is a great way to visually see the tasks at hand and tackle them in an efficient way. Consider a home management system that allows you to complete household tasks efficiently the other 6 days of the week. Setting boundaries is important, along with say “no” to things that create over scheduling in your life.

Taking a day off will look different for every mom. For some it may look like not doing anything, for others it may look like being able to take a beach day without worrying about laundry or dirty toilets. The important thing to remember is that our goal is to rest and feel like our home is in a rhythmic place.

With practice, you can begin to find a day of rest for yourself and your family. Taking a day off as a mom is not only beneficial for your well-being but also essential for your overall happiness and joy. By recognizing the importance of rest, planning ahead, creating a home management system, and setting boundaries, you can schedule a day of rest and return to your daily responsibilities feeling refreshed and revitalized.
